Jed's New Hat

14" x 11" Oil on Canvas

On a late afternoon last fall our younger grandson Jed joined us on the  lanai wearing his new gray hat.  Jed enjoys head-gear whether it's caps, hats or helmets!  As he sat down I was blown away seeing  how  the warm  light played across his face creating both warm and  cool shadows.  Naturally this sent me scurrying for the camera and  the sketch book to make color notes knowing someday this would become a painting!  Jed is very patient posing .   Our two grandsons are favorite models and a painting of Eddie is on the easel now.

This was an exercise in how I might "puzzle snap" these interesting warm and cool shapes together   to create  a believable image of Jed's handsome face.   Thank you for posing for me, Jed! I hope you like the painting.  Wonder what ever happened to the gray hat?

  1. I may be wrong, but Jed seems to resemble you, Rosemary! I think the painting is wonderful and I am sure Jed does as well. It is a wonderful play of light and shadow too.

    1. Thank you for the compliment, Sherry! This one was really a challenge - but don't know when painting a face has been more fun! Jed likes it.

  5. Oh Thanks, Hilda! Coming from another portrait artist, your comments are so meaningful! We are always looking for that "special" lighting aren't we?

  7. Thanks so much, Pat! Portraits are easier for me than still life or landscape paintings - so - I tend to lean toward them. Eddie and Jed make it even more fun!
