Just for Fun

Big Chick
12" x 12" Acrylic & Caran d'Ache on wrapped canvas

Earlier this month I had an opportunity to watch Steven Assael work his magic painting the portrait of a lovely model on a board toned bright red - not burnt sienna but RED! Steven's portraits seem to glow from within and are so very beautiful. Not quite ready to try a portrait on this ground, a larger than life "chicken" succulent rosette was less intimidating! Working in acrylic and without spending too much time, this carefree exercise was fun as I tried not to cover all the red! Who says I'm afraid of color?!!

    1. Thanks Martine! It was fun imagining those hues were really there! Sometimes acrylic provides a break from oil painting and acrylic colors are bold!

    1. Hilda, thank you! I can just imagine how soft and beautifully you would paint this little rosette in pastel! The red ground was fun!

  3. Absolutely gorgeous piece, Rosemary. Never comes as a surprise though. Your work always is gorgeous. I so love beautiful succulents too. Stems from a botany class at ISU I took many years ago now. I remember a large succulent plant and the instructor telling us how expensive that plant would be to buy at its size.

    1. Oh Sherry! Your words always put a big smile on my face! My mother so enjoyed her "hens and chicks" and kept a strawberry jar planted for me with little faces peeking out every pot opening! While working on this piece, it felt as if she were in the studio with me! We have a good variety of succulents here in South Florida. Bet I would have enjoyed your botany class!
