Silent Sentinel

                                 36" x 24" Oil on Masonite

The Great Blue Heron  is a majestic sight whether cruising the coastline with slow wing beats or standing motionless scanning for prey.  Sometimes it  will wade belly deep making long, deliberate steps.  When in flight, the heron tucks in its neck and the long legs trail out behind.  A beautiful bird to behold and fortunately here in South Florida there is no shortage of them.

This bird was spotted, photographed and sketched  at Ponce de Leon park in Punta Gorda.

"SILENT SENTINEL"  was juried into the Fine Feathered Friends Show last month and last week sold to a collector who lives on a lake and enjoys watching a variety of wading  birds.

  1. Rosemary - this is beautiful. We have these birds here in Ohio when the weather warms up. Just gorgeous painting. Hope you are enjoying the month of March. Take care and if you have time send us cold people in Ohio a bit of that warm Fla. weather (LOL)!

    1. Thank you - and thanks for the email! It's a bit chilly here this morning but we don't take our warm sunshine for granted! You have spring just around the corner with all the fresh yellow greens and lovely blossoms! Keep that brush wet! I really appreciate your comments!

  2. This Blue Heron is painted BEAUTIFULLY, Rosemary. I see them occasionally and that's when they are motionless (like you said) by my pond staring down at my koi's....! They are definitely beautiful birds..

    1. Oh Hilda, what a great idea for a painting - the heron watching your koi - no doubt you have water lilies. Wouldn't that make an interesting and fun pastel creation! Thanks so much for stopping by and for your warm comments!

  8. Oh Pat - thank you, thank you!! I had never thought of the danger to koi until you and Hilda mentioned it! - Gotta admit this silent bird standing by and reflecting in the pond would make a lovely painting! :-)
